After climbing the serpentines, the route enters a flatter and wider area – Patleyna. This is an open plateau with meadows, bushes and panoramic views south towards the Balkan Mountains. The area is relatively peaceful, sparsely populated and suitable for a short break. During the warmer months here you can meet flocks of sheep, local shepherds and wild herbs spreading fragrance in the air. In good weather, you can see the peaks of the Vrachan Balkan and even part of the Iskar Gorge to the south.
Continuing south, you reach one of the most interesting and distinctive places on the route – the rock massif "Ushite". Its name comes from the shape of the two main rock formations, which resemble ears protruding from the ridge. The place is not only a natural but also a cultural landmark. From here you can enjoy stunning views of the Iskar Gorge, especially at sunset. The area around Ushite is ideal for resting, taking photos and observing birds of prey that nest on the rocks.
After passing through Ushite, the route begins a long, technical descent along paths and dirt roads to the village of Zverino. The terrain here is varied - in places steeper and stony, with sections of pine and deciduous forests. Particularly attractive are the parts where the path literally winds over the gorge, with sheer cliffs on the right.
The village of Zverino is strategically connected to Vratsa and Sofia via the railway line. The village has shops, guest houses and a train stop - an ideal place for the end point of the route.
A natural and technical challenge in the heart of the Vratsa Balkan
This route is suitable for both mountain biking and hiking and offers a combination of physical exertion, rocky views and varied terrain. Extremely suitable for more experienced mountaineers and bikers looking for a true mountain experience with dynamics and history.
Starting point: the city of Vratsa
The route starts from the city of Vratsa, located at the foot of the Vratsa Mountain. The city is known for its karst rock massifs towering above it - Okolchitsa Peak, Markov Kamak, Vratsata, as well as the highest waterfall in the Balkans - Skaklya. Leaving the city, the route quickly enters mountainous terrain, where the asphalt is left behind, and the serpentines of Medkovets come to the fore.
The serpentines are a winding path that climbs the mountain slope in a series of bends. This is a difficult but attractive part of the route, challenging for cyclists but extremely satisfying. Along the way, views of the Vratsa Plain and the city of Vratsa, which gradually recedes far into the distance, open up. The terrain is mostly rocky, with sections of rocky passages.
